caged little words
battered down from time and misuse
like broken doves

your mind has eroded the letters,
the sounds that create all the thoughts you wish to say
you catch them in your palms
like fragile fireflies
and place them in the mason jars of regret
to die

the brittle words lying on your tongue
begging to fly away
are smashed by the teeth of self-destruction
they're choked down into your lungs and locked away

those words, little birds, and screaming, "tell me! free me!"
but you never unlock the cage to free them
why?

the fear of rejection is like poison on your lips
sealing your mouth and forever locking away
all
